“I didn’t choose the skuxx life, the skuxx life chose me.”

After a rebellious orphan flees into the New Zealand wilderness with his new foster uncle, a national manhunt ensues to find the lost duo.

At its core Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a buddy movie between an unlikely duo (what buddy movie isn't?); involving adorable "gangster" orphan, Ricky (Julian Dennison in a show-stealing performance), and grouchy-yet-lovable foster uncle, Hec (Sam Neill doing what Sam Neill does best: being incredible).

Although the plot may appear straightforward and familiar, it executes all aspects with masterful precision and a refreshingly unique style, paving the way to a fantastic movie that should find its way onto any "best of 2016" movie list. It's basically a live action New Zealand version of Up; and nothing about that sentence isn't awesome.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople proves that Taika Waititi can deliver the goods, which makes it unsurprising that this Hollywood outsider was entrusted with the direction of upcoming Marvel blockbuster, Thor: Ragnarok.

Let's hope Waititi's genius transitions to the big screen. Until then, however, make sure you give this oddball Kiwi masterpiece a go.
