10 Great Dark Comedy Films You Haven't Seen
1. World's Greatest Dad (2009)
“If you’re that depressed, reach out to someone, and remember, suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems.”
World’s Greatest dad follows failed writer, Lance (Robin Williams), as he tries his best to stumble through life one day at a time as an undervalued teacher and unappreciated father. Fate, as it happens, has a twisted sense of irony, and provides Lance with the opportunity to achieve all he’s ever wanted... at the expense of his recently deceased son, Kyle (Daryl Sabara).
The words of the above quote, spoken by Robin William’s character Lance, will forever echo the untimely and tragic death of one of the greatest comedians ever to grace stage or screen. The film has a powerful message in its own right, but when coupled with the eerie foretelling of its star’s own fate, brings a whole new weight to the dark subject matter of this under-appreciated treasure.
For an actor who spent his career hopping between show stealing performances in both drama and comedy, World’s Greatest Dad’s darkly comedic tone provided Williams with the perfect environment to show off the full scope of his world renowned talent.
World's Greatest Dad is a fantastic and darkly comical depiction of suburban life, high-school trends, and what it means to be popular - even famous - at the expense of others. Watch it!
