10 Great Directors Who Made Terrible Debut Films
5. Edgar Wright - A Fistful Of Fingers
It may be unfair to judge Edgar Wright, one of the most influential and talented directors of his generation, on his first film considering he made it on a budget of $15,000 but this was exactly what critics did.
His debut was a Western parody entitled A Fistful of Fingers - a clever title spoofing Clint Eastwood's Western A Fistful of Dollars - ultimately fared poorly at the box office and with critics. While many of the critics noted that the content was nothing special most conceded that the direction was exciting and marked the talent of an upcoming filmmaker.
Having retreated back to the small screen Wright met Simon Pegg which led to the cult classic Spaced and off the back of this an idea for a zombie movie. So when Wright came to direct Shaun of the Dead a few years later it offered him a chance to start his film career again and he gladly did so without reference to his failed first attempt.
