10 Great Directors Who Made Terrible Debut Films

4. Ron Howard - Grand Theft Auto

Fear And Desire
New World Pictures

Grand Theft Auto may now be recognised as a video game series but it was Ron Howard that introduced these three words to the world in his 1977 directorial debut.

The only two similarities between the video games and the film was they both contained cars and were both successfully with the public as the latter grossed $15 million at the box office. However, since its debut time has not been kind to Howard's debut with only 23% of critics giving it a positive review on Rotten Tomatoes and with an audience score only slightly higher at 35%.

Its success at the box office did allow him to helm other big 80s blockbusters such as Splash, Cocoon and Willow which in turn allowed him to become the respected Oscar-winning director of A Beautiful Mind. The moral of the story: as long as your film makes money you can keeping making more.
