10 Great Films That Already Flew Under The Radar In 2016

Comedy sequels rarely improve on their predecessors, as those who sat through Barbershop 2: Back in Business will attest to. More than a decade has passed since that 2004 retreading of the well received Barbershop (2002), enough time for a fresh yet familiar third instalment to be devised.

The ensemble cast that conspired for the first two films return, with stars Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and the old gang joined by Tyga and Nikki Minaj among others. Acting musicians don't exactly inspire confidence, with Cube himself having a hit and miss record in comedy, though the former rapper leads a cast on top of their game here and some sharp directing from Malcolm D. Lee make this Barbershop the best yet.

Calvin's (Ice Cube) shop looks different to how it looked a decade previous, with the once male dominated workplace now co-ed, and while the battle of sexes is the basis for a number of the gags, its the social and political commentary that sets The Next Cut apart from your average comedy.

Growing tired of waiting for changes promised by an outgoing President, Calvin and his cohort are forced to make their own stand against violence in their neighbourhood, tackling the racial issues currently dividing the United States with snappy wit and massive amounts of heart.
