3. The Wizard Of Oz
The great irony of The Wizard of Oz is how Dorothy (Judy Garland) wants to get home to Kansas so badly even though by the end of the film she realizes how much she'll miss her friends, Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), Tin Man (Jack Haley) and the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr). The movie does acknowledge this irony, which makes Dorothy's return to Kansas all the more poignant. Deep down, even though Dorothy realized how much her Aunt and Uncle loved her, she'll still never see her friends again, even if it was actually all a dream. But we can always return to Oz and see our friends again, and take joy in how they all had what they wanted from the Wizard- they just needed to discover it for themselves. Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion are the types of friends we'd all want if we found ourselves whisked away to another world. And Dorothy and Toto too. These are all characters who are pure of heart, and who doesn't want friends like that?
