10 Great Horror Movies You Definitely Missed In 2023

6. Brooklyn 45

Brooklyn 45

In Brooklyn 45, five WWII veterans decide to pay a visit to their commander, Hock, who has been struggling since his wife took her own life. To appease their commander, the quintet take part in a seance so Hock can speak to his deceased lover. This kind gesture backfires, since the seance quickly goes off the rails.

Although the story primarily takes place in one room in real-time, things never feel stagnant since the cast keep the energy up and work brilliantly off one another. Every revelation made during the seance is highly effective, since they were subtly foreshadowed in the opening.

Rather than focusing on the paranormal threat during the climax, Brooklyn 45 subverts expectations, turning the third act into a riveting drama. Although this could be disappointing for viewers who were expecting traditional scares, this decision is a smart move, demonstrating how living souls are far more terrifying than the dead ones.

Even though Brooklyn 45 has plenty of phantoms, it's the characters' ghosts of the past that are sure to leave the audience well and truly spooked.
