10 Great Movie Characters Who Never Really Existed
7. Wilson - Castaway
Everybody's favorite sporting equipment turned friend at number 7, WILSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON! Now, I know 'Wilson' exists, but clearly the 'Wilson' Chuck talks to in the film isn't a volleyball. If you see what I mean? Wilson's a spherical object, traditionally designed for the sport of Volleyball. During his venture, his package is lost, and discovered by a Cast Away (2000) known as Chuck Noland (I only just realized the irony in that). Chuck and Wilson become good friends, as they somehow manage to survive on the secluded haven. Thematically Wilson was conceived when screenwriter of Cast Away William Broyles Jr. purposely stranded himself on an island for a week in order to properly write the script. A volleyball washed up on shore during his time, and thus Wilson was born! Why is Wilson important? Well first of all he was a feasible way of Chuck's character still managing to have dialogue without the need for a second human survivor which would completely alter the film's mood. In addition it kind of epitomizes humankind's versatility and our imagination. Oddly it almost felt like Chuck owed a lot to Wilson. His sanity somehow remained, and we felt a lot of genuine sadness when it came their time to part. Pretty moving stuff, for a volleyball.
