5. Mother Bates - Psycho

rsz_mother Mother Bates. What's more scary than the doubting glazing of an ill approving mother? It's not so much the character that's great, but the way it's revealed to us. We hear her cackling screech, feel her presence and rarely see her apart from a few tense and terrifying moments. Hitchcock and his eye to attention, and affinity for suspense makes Mother Bates a hell of a character. Obviously there's an element of technicality in this. Mother Bates used to exist, and obviously this persona conjured by Norman technically 'exists'. The mystery unfolds as our protagonists find the dead corpse of Mother rotting in the bates residence. Followed by the insane Norman dressed in her garbs, clutching the trademark knife scornfully. Mother also encapsulates an era in which psychosis and psychology became open for experimentation in the realm of film making. Her influence took Psycho (1960) to heights of great success, and numerous sequels. In fact, she has quite a lot in common with our next character...
