10 Great Movie Characters Who Never Really Existed
3. Delbert Grady - The Shining
The butler is in. Delbert Grady is the former groundskeeper for the Overlook hotel. He preceded Jack Torrence as caretaker turned would-be killer. However, he appears to Jack as a polite butler who mistakenly spills advocaat on Jack during a bizarre and surrealist fantasy in the hotel function room. 'I corrected them, sir! Just as you should to!' he bellows as the cogs slowly turn in Jack's head. Belgrady slaughtered his wife and twin daughters, the latter of which we see wandering around the hotel in apparition form. We assume Belgrady also is a permanent resident of the mansion. Possibly just conjured by Jack's corrupted mind, it's never truly defined. None of that matters. What matters is the punch of his speech and persuasion, and grip over Jack. As Wendy locks Jack in the food storage room. It unlocks mysteriously after a thorough scolding by the good chap which leads us to believe he holds some mystic power. Either way, Delbert Grady is one butler's service I would gladly refuse.
