10 Great Movie Sequels (That Nobody Saw)
7. Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Coming in just three years before Wes Craven thrust himself back into the mainstream with the meta-horror masterpiece Scream, this often overlooked entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street series was igniting passions from film fans long before Ghostface reared his head.
Disregarding all narrative and lore from previous entries in the series, New Nightmare went down the meta-fiction route of having Freddy Kruger invade the real world and haunt the actors from the original film as they begin production on yet another sequel.
Bringing back the likes of Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund and John Saxon as themselves adds a layer of authenticity that few horror sequels can ever hope to achieve. Even Wes Craven gets in on the fun, playing an exaggerated version of himself in one of the film's key scenes.
After years of increasingly campy and disappointing sequels, New Nightmare took Kruger back to basics and made him scary again; making this the perfect companion piece to the original.
Largely ignored upon initial release, the film's reputation has grown in recent years with many acknowledging its forward thinking approach to the genre and how its actors' lives are often shaped by the films they choose to participate in.
