10 Great Movie Sequels (That Nobody Saw)

5. Return To Oz

The Two Jakes
Disney

After a staggering forty-six years, the now iconic The Wizard of Oz got an unofficial sequel from the minds at Disney. Surely the follow-up to a film that has been passed down multiple generations and is loved the world over would do well, right?

Sadly that wasn't the case.

Return to Oz was a commercial failure, making an estimated 11.1 million dollars against a budget of 28 million. Critics of the time were also divided on the film; with some ranking it amongst Disney's finest works and others who felt that the film was far too dark for younger audiences.

The latter is especially true, as Return to Oz is a relentlessly grim and creepy tale that stands apart from its happy, shiny predecessor. Gone is all the music and whimsy of the MGM version of Oz and in its place is a cold, defiled landscape where misery and terror lurks around every corner.

This darker approach may have been what ultimately lead to Return to Oz's dismal performance at the box-office, but it's this same darkness that has lead it to become a cult favourite in recent times.
