10 Great Movies Starring Doctor Who Actors You Need To See

7. Karen Gillan - Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

Fright Night
Marvel Studios

Whilst not the first Who actor to step into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Eccleston appeared as Malekith in Thor: The Dark World and David Tennant was the excellent villain of Jessica Jones), this is possibly the most high profile jump.

Gillan, who obviously played much-loved Eleventh Doctor companion Amy for two- and a-bit seasons of the show is all but unrecognisable in the first Guardians of the Galaxy; sporting a shaved head, blue skin and many electronic components, she stalked the Guardians on the trail of her sister/arch rival as the villainous Nebula, one of the adopted daughters of Thanos.

It is in the sequel however that Gillan is really given opportunity to shine. Being captured by the Guardians relatively early on, Gillan performs with the skill of a much more experienced performer as she lures the audience into liking the villain as she slowly begins to distance herself from her father and wonders more if her sister was right all along.

Her deadpan interactions with Rocket Raccoon provide a lot of laughs whilst her scenes with Gamora feel suitably fraught with that mix of tension, love, hate and rivalry that can only come from a sibling relationship.
