10 Great Movies Starring Doctor Who Actors You Need To See

2. Carey Mulligan - Promising Young Woman

The most recent film on the list, Promising Young Woman generated a lot of Oscar buzz at this year’s ceremony, ultimately taking home an award for best screenplay.

A very timely flick, it tells the story of a young woman who spends her nights going to nightclubs where she pretends to be inebriated to the point of falling over. She then waits for a self-appointed “nice guy” to come along and help her home and, when they inevitably try to make an inappropriate move on her, she reveals that she is not drunk and confronts them about their actions.

The movie stars Carey Mulligan in the lead role, who you may remember from one of Doctor Who’s highest regarded episodes, Blink. The first appearance of the Weeping Angels has become somewhat of a legendary episode in the fandom with many fans considering it the best episode of the series. Hell, many choose it as the best episode to show non-Whovians when introducing them to the show.

Mulligan turns in a layered performance of a cynical young woman fighting a battle between her sense of justice, a desire for revenge on behalf of her deceased friend and her wishes to move on. The film does an excellent job of laying out multiple situations around its central premise, generating conversation about the sensitive topics long after the credits roll. It is rare that a movie can manage to handle such a serious topic in a sensitive way whilst also being engrossing and darkly funny. Definitely a recommend.
