10 Great Recent Sci-Fi Movies You Probably Haven't Seen
1. Annihilation
Annihilation recently topped the list of recent underrated movies which deserve a second chance, and it tops the list again here. Rankings like these are always subjective, but what is undeniable is that Annihilation’s terrible release ruined any chance of momentum.
Coming out at the same time as what turned out to be mammoth hit in Black Panther was bad enough, but that’s just the start of it. The movie released in US & Canadian cinemas in February, then European, African, Australian and South American Netflix in March, Chinese cinemas in April, then the rest of Asia on Netflix afterwards.
It’s an absolutely bonkers release schedule, and it came with practically no promotion. Annihilation was narratively ambitious, had a star studded cast led by Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac, and had gorgeous visuals. It was, however, quite a complicated tale to sell, and the studio just didn’t bother.
Like all great sci fi, Annihilation is a movie which asks probing questions and offers up an absorbing world for you to get lost in. It makes no attempt to explain itself, and that’s an approach that’s not for everyone, but it’s certainly one worth catching up on if you’ve missed.
