10 Great Sci-Fi Movies For People Who Don't Like Sci-Fi

7. Sorry To Bother You

The Martian Matt Damon

Boots Riley’s timely satire sets its stall out as a biting commentary on America’s class and race issues at first. The impossibly charismatic Lakeith Stanfield plays Cassius Green, a downtrodden telemarketer who learns the secret of success: by affecting a “white voice”, he rises through the ranks of the company and becomes a huge money spinner, thereby forgetting his roots.

Then, he meets up with company honcho Steve (Armie Hammer), and things go truly wild. Without spoiling the second half of the film, Riley sets out his film’s dystopian world in the first with WorryFree, an exciting new company allowing those on the breadline to alleviate their financial woes by effectively selling themselves into slavery.

It gets a lot stranger from there. Those familiar with Riley’s work as a rapper with The Coup will know his views on capitalist society, and he’s not scared to share them here.

Sorry To Bother You is the best kind of state of the nation movie, angry and acerbic but no less fun for its didactic edge. You’d be encouraged not to read around this one - just strap yourself in for the crazy journey.
