10 Great Sci-Fi Movies For People Who Don't Like Sci-Fi
2. Palm Springs
It’s best to go into this one as blind as possible but in brief - Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti play Nyles and Sarah, two guests at a wedding neither particularly wants to be at. The ceremony unfolds, and the two eventually meet and form a bond, before the indie romcom vibes give way to one of the sweetest and smartest sci fis in recent years.
The central concept owes a substantial debt to Groundhog Day, but expands on the notion and plays with time in a manner far beyond other films that have utilised a similar structure. It’s true to its concept, and while it aims for charming character comedy first and foremost, it never abandons the sci fi core.
The performances are terrific throughout, with J.K Simmons great as ever, a frightening man with a vendetta against Samberg’s character that pays off beautifully. The success of the film comes down to the romantic leads, however, and Samberg and Milioti are superb, with excellent chemistry and a deft comic touch.
This 2020 release was consigned to VOD due to the pandemic, but all the same has every chance of becoming a significant cult hit.
