10 Great Sci-Fi Movies For People Who Don't Like Sci-Fi

3. Under The Skin

The Martian Matt Damon

“Scarlett Johansson as a shape shifting alien strolls around Glasgow luring men into her trap” seems like a pretty easy sell for a movie, but the brilliant and truly bizarre Under The Skin did not make a lot of money at the box office. Watching it, that may be for the best - Under The Skin certainly isn’t for everyone, but it’s unforgettable.

Johansson plays an unnamed alien who has come to Earth for unexplained purposes. She drives a white van around the city, hypnotises men with her beauty, then brings them to her lair where they sink into the inky depths of an infinite void.

It's an enigmatic and stylish piece, a real art film which an actor of Johansson's mainstream stature was bold to take. The mood is unique, and while parts of the film are deliberately ponderous, the scenes set in the mysterious pitch black realm are simply astonishing.

The episodic, uncertain nature of the film and the incredible score by Mica Levi all serve to make this an uncomfortable, chilling, but uniquely rewarding experience.
