10 Great Subplots In Bad Recent Movies
2. Babu Frik Reprograms C-3PO - Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is by far the most disappointing blockbuster of the last few years, delivering a sloppy fizzle of a conclusion to the Skywalker Saga that both walked back some of The Last Jedi's more controversial decisions and delivered a slew of unearned, sappy fan service.
If The Last Jedi was a great movie with a few wonky scenes, The Rise of Skywalker is basically the opposite.
While the spasmodically edited action sequences might provide some temporary, empty-calorie thrills, the only subplot that touts any real soul whatsoever involves the introduction of a new fan favourite character.
On Kijimi, the heroes meet with adorable droidsmith Babu Frik (Shirley Henderson), who extracts a Sith text from the memory of C-3PO (Anthony Daniels).
Though this may ultimately be just another step along the film's breadcrumb-following fetch quest plot, it's by far the most charming diversion in the entire movie, largely thanks to Babu Frik's awesome character design and generally charming presence.
He provided some much-needed relief in an otherwise creatively bankrupt movie. Can he get his own Disney+ series already, please?
