2002's 28 Days Later is a seminal piece of filmmaking.

The critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic horror is frequently credited for revitalizing the zombie genre amidst a period of notable stagnation. This lofty accolade makes the fact that director Danny Boyle does not actually consider 28 Days Later a zombie film all the more deliciously ironic.

Helmed by powerhouse performances from an all-star cast including Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris and Brendan Gleeson, the British production derived a large portion of its success from an innovative piece of dramatic license by Boyle. The director's revolutionary concept of terrifyingly quick zombies was in sharp contrast to the moaning, shuffling counterparts of productions gone by and added an jaw dropping new element of heart pounding terror to proceedings depicting the outbreak of the Rage virus.

Ultimately, Murphy, Harris and the daughter of Gleeson's character survive hordes of infected and deserters-turned-sex-slavers to make it to the end credits. The closing sequences of the movie reveals that the infected are are slowly dying out as they starve to death, while the sight of a foreign fighter jet provides an uplifting confirmation that humanity has endured and survived. With that being said, it is worth noting that three decidedly bleaker alternate endings to the movie were actually filmed, all of which end with the death of Murphy's Jim.

Don't ask, don't tell.
