10 Greatest Astronauts In Film History

5. Ted Dougherty - Marooned (1969)

Astronauts - Film - Marooned Marooned is a movie in exactly the same vein as my Honorable Mention film, Stranded. After several months in space, three astronauts discover their ship is unable to make the return trip to Earth. With oxygen enough for only two of the three men to survive, they suffer through agonies we can only imagine as they await their rescue. Ted Dougherty is the Chief Astronaut at NASA. When the head of NASA, played by Gregory Peck, decides the three endangered astronauts can't be rescued, Doughtery gives him a quick smack down and heads into space to rescue the ill-fated astronauts. With a cast that includes Richard Crenna, Gregory Peck, Gene Hackman, and James Franciscus, this is a movie sci-fi and space fans alike will certainly enjoy. Why He's Great: Dougherty ignores his own safety and flies to the rescue aboard an experimental ship. He arrives in time to save the remaining two astronauts and, theoretically, save America's faith in the space program as well. Quite a feat.
