8. Blake Gaines - San Andreas
As disaster-porn goes, San Andreas was pretty spectacular. The visuals and sound design both towering, plus it offers urgent pacing which only heightens the intensity. However most impressive of all is Alexandra Daddario's Blake; daughter of Dwayne Johnson's lead. Her reasoning in the film could be very much a means to exploit her good looks (she is unfathomably attractive), but Blake isn't involved just because she's a total hottie, in fact, she is the film's truest victor. In a feature alongside human superhero Johnson, it is impressive just how much character building has gone into young Blake. She is a forward-thinking and progressive woman; one who notes her surroundings and the essentials required to thrive in these harsh environments. She also supports two male characters who are clueless in surviving an earthquake situation, and she renders the growing family dynamic which gives this mega-blockbuster a much needed heart. Blake's will to survive is evident throughout, even when she is caught in some seriously nasty situations. This is a character who optimises and surges on.
