10 Greatest Films About Journalism

2. Ace In The Hole (1951)

Ace in the Hole Kirk Douglas
Paramount Pictures

Kirk Douglas stars as Chuck Tatum, an ethically flawed reporter whose declining career has led to him landing a job in the uneventful town of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Desperate for the big story that will propel him back to the top, Tatum eventually catches a break, albeit a manufactured one.

After stumbling across a trapped cave bound treasure hunter, the reporter sees an opportunity and manufactures the incident into a frenzied media circus, that would eventually captivate the entire nation. But toying with a man's life for the sake of the story is a dangerous game and soon enough, Tatum's sinister act threatens to turn sour for the opportunistic reporter. An indictment of media exploitation, the noir classic holds a powerful and timeless lesson that all journalists should respect.

Sunset Boulevard director Billy Wilder is not exempt to the occasional ageless classic and Ace in The Hole is no exception! Like so many classics of it's era, the film was largely underappreciated when first released and despite earning two Oscar nominations, Ace in the Hole would receive mixed reviews. Now seventy years on from the film's release, the Wilder-Douglas classic is celebrated for its cynical and twisted representation of media in society.
