No, Tom Cruise can't do a good Irish accent. He can barely do a passable Irish accent. But that doesn't really matter, does it? Just shut up and watch him and Nicole Kidman back before things got all weird with Scientology.

Far and Away is the gauzy, romantic story of a peasant and a rich girl from Ireland who immigrate to the United States in search of opportunity and freedom. They can't stand each other to begin with, but wouldn't you know, they sort of develop a thing for each other somewhere along the way. Shock of the century.

But there's a certain charm to the slight, entirely predictable proceedings, especially given the real-life relationship that existed between Cruise and Kidman. (Sure, it's sort of uncomfortable looking back on it, knowing what would go down between them, but in the early 90s they were like Brangelina.)

The bottom line is that a period romance is always going to be a popular choice for a rainy day and a glass of wine, and this one is entirely inoffensive and even a bit of fun.
