When S.W.O.R.D. were trying to figure out who was trapped in Westview with Wanda, there was one character missing from their list. No one found out Agnes’ real name, because this was Agatha Harkness, an ancient witch with powers comparable to Wanda’s.

She was essentially working in Westview undercover, looking to get more information on Wanda’s powers, and to see if her hunch about the legend of the Scarlet Witch was true. She manipulated Wanda, she played with her mind, and was a genuine threat before the Avenger realized her true potential.

Arguably her most villainous act was killing poor Sparky in an attempt to prove that Wanda could bring things back to life, but it’s actually quite easy to sympathise with Agatha. She had been training and honing her powers for centuries, but along comes Wanda who has these abilities that could alter the fabric of reality without even trying, and without the discipline or the knowledge of how to properly use them. Agatha felt she was more entitled to Wanda’s powers than she was, and could wield them properly. She genuinely had a point.

She called Maximoff out on hurting the people of Westview, though she took over Ralph Bohner’s mind herself, and would have taken more to bring down the Scarlet Witch. Kathryn Hahn’s character was compelling, as the actress herself put in a storming performance as both Agnes the nosy neighbour and Agatha, and fans are understandably excited for her return in House of Harkness.
