4. Halloween
http://youtu.be/jCTGvDwdVNo Ready for another spook-fest. Here is the final horror film to make it onto this list (unless you count the film at number 3 as horror) and definitely the most effective opening to any horror movie in the history of the genre. I honestly have to say I am not a fan of this movie- in fact i find it to be quite appalling. The dialogue is laughable, the acting not that much better and it is just a little melodramatic for my taste. To be far, I am not a huge John Carpenter fan, though I do like The Thing. I am sure in 1978 it scared the hell out of it's audience but to todays standards it is pretty tame. The only moment from the entire film that scared me was the opening... and what an opening this is. This is a masterclass in how to open a horror movie. Everything from the use of eerie music (again), the dim orange glow of the lighting, the slow zooms and the point of view shots works perfectly here. This opening uses many of the typical conventions of a horror movie and combines them masterfully. The unexpected twist at the end which shows the persons eyes- who we the audience has been looking- actually belong to a small child, who we have just witnessed stab his sister to death is brilliant. It is just a shame that the rest of the film didn't live up to the genius that is this first 7 minutes- then again, maybe you disagree?
