10 Greatest Movie Villains Of The Last Decade
4. Red - Us
Jordan Peele, one of the most exciting voices in U.S horror, knows his way around a good villain. His debut Get Out was well populated with varied antagonists with a smart social bent. His follow up, Us, goes one better with Lupita Nyong'o in a dual role as protagonist Adelaide and her shadowy doppelganger Red.
The less you know going into Us the better, but suffice to say Red is the stuff of nightmares. A slight woman, Nyong’o is not generally a frightening presence, but she transforms herself into pure malevolent energy as her monstrous duplicate. Red moves with balletic grace but speaks with a demonic rasp after years of silence. She has watched Adelaide from the darkness and resentment has built, spewing it all out in a captivating monologue.
It’s one of the best dual performances in recent years, and Nyong’o shines particularly in the villainous role. A lot goes unanswered about Red, but the important stuff is all there: she has been wronged, she has seeped in rage for years, and she is out for revenge.
