Though the Ten Rings organisation has appeared a couple of times previously in the MCU, the actual artefacts from which it took its name were absent from Iron Man and Iron Man 3, as was the true leader of the army.

The first scene of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings focused on the latter half of its title, as it showed Wenwu and his conquests throughout the last thousand years. There was a fair bit of heavy exposition needed, however when it is done like this, there can be no complaints.

The opening scene of the movie saw the villain take on an entire army by himself using only his Ten Rings to first create a protective barrier around himself, and then to destroy any and all opposing soldiers in his vicinity. This was very reminiscent to how Thor dove headfirst into Hela’s army of Berserkers, or when he arrived in Wakanda.

Shang-Chi heavily featured Chinese culture, and the depiction of ancient China in the opening scene was simply stunning. The mountainous backdrop to which the battle took place almost stole focus from the fighting itself as it was such a beautiful shot. To the narration from Ying Li in Mandarin, this got the movie off to an incredible start.
