10 Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made
1. Akira
In 1988, the world was treated to what many consider to be the greatest anime film ever made with Akira. The post-apocalyptic cyberpunk film has long been revered by fans, and it influenced the medium for decades.
Because the movie was so successful, various attempts have been made over the years to bring it back to the silver screen via a live-action treatment, but that's easier said than done. Warner Bros. acquired the rights to do just that back in 2002, but the project consistently ran into problems.
Multiple attempts have been made to bring it to life, and in the 18 years since Warner Bros. first attempted what appears to be impossible, five directors and ten writers have been attached, but nothing has come of it. In 2017, it was revealed that Taika Waititi was on to direct with a release set for May 2021, but Waititi's schedule put a hold on everything due to his MCU commitments.
As of July 2020, Waititi's adaptation is on indefinite hiatus, but there is a chance it will be made.
There are rumors that it will ultimately be broken up into a television series, but nothing has been confirmed, and there's no way to know whether or not Waititi will eventually direct the movie, which appears doomed to never happen.
