1. Hard Boiled
George Miller recently took the idea of the car chase and extended it into a feature length masterpiece - more than 20 years ago John Woo did something similar to the shoot-out, and no film since has come close to matching the intensity of action found in Hard Boiled. A seminal action movie admired by directors around the world, Hard Boiled stars Chow Yun-fat and Tony "The Grandmaster" Leung as a detective and undercover cop who form an alliance to take out an arms dealing group. Not averse to hiding their weapons stash in the basement of a crowded hospital, adding an extra layer of tension when newborn babies cry as the bullets begin to fly. And boy do the bullets fly. It's impossible to overstate just how perfectly Woo films the action in Hard Boiled - the opening tea house shootout alone contains more grace and elegance than a hundred of the inevitable imitators which followed in its wake. Dementedly over the top yet oozing style, watching people get shot to pieces has never been this cool. What other great action movie gems would you recommend on Netflix?
