Normally, video game adaptations are a recipe for disaster. Werewolves Within, however, proved to be a rare exception to the norm.

A loose adaptation of the party game of the same name in which players must figure out which of them is a werewolf, the film takes this basic mystery premise and runs wild with it to create a giddy whodunnit thriller.

The flick begins with mild-mannered park ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) arriving at his new post in the quiet, snow-covered town of Beaverfield. He’s introduced to the oddball residents, including charismatic postal worker Cecily (Milana Vayntrub), who he soon befriends.

A blizzard hits, taking out the power, and the townsfolk are forced to seek refuge in the lodge to wait out the storm. But when the bodies start piling up, it becomes evident that a killer is amongst them – and that killer could be a werewolf.

While there are a lot of genuine laughs to be found in this quirky comedy, Werewolves Within is primarily a mystery, and a great one at that. There’s plenty of red herrings and gotcha moments to keep viewers guessing until the answers are finally revealed in a satisfying climax.
