Zombie romances are nothing especially new. Warm Bodies and Life After Beth were both enjoyable gems from this decade; but none of these can compare to the raunchiness, quirkiness, and heartache of Nina Forever.

Rob (Cian Barry) is suicidal after losing his girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O'Shaughnessy), in a car accident. Still overcome by grief, he becomes involved in a relationship with Holly (Abigail Hardingham), one of his colleagues at the supermarket he works at, to try and move on with his life. She’s enthralled by his suicidal tendencies but is nevertheless passionately enamoured with him.

But whenever the pair’s passions take them to the bedroom, they’re joined by the rotting corpse of Nina, who materialises from the bedsheets to voice her disapproval of Rob’s latest love interest.

The premise is bizarre enough to attract the attention of horror fans looking for something very different. Likewise, its wry black comedy is somewhat of an acquired taste. However, what sets Nina Forever apart from other undead love affairs is the powerful emotional punch writer-director duo Ben and Chris Blaine pack into their project.

Nina Forever paints a tender portrait of grief which will stick with viewers, well, forever.
