10 Hidden Gem Slasher Horror Movies

9. Smothered

Dressed to Kill
Indican Pictures

From writer/director John Schneider - yes, as in the Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville actor - 2016's Smothered is a picture that has plenty to offer horror hounds

Firstly, Smothered features a multitude of familiar horror faces playing skewed versions of themselves. There's Kane Hodder of the Friday the 13th and Hatchet franchises, there's Bill Moseley of Rob Zombie's Firefly films and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, there's R.A. Mihailoff who played the titular beast of Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, and there's the super-buff Don Shanks who's best known for playing the infamous Shape in Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

Invited to a trailer park and tasked with scaring punters, this group are expecting an easy payday. Well, that is until somebody starts to stalk and attack these horror favourites.

With the aforementioned names spending so much time often stuck behind masks or heavy make-up work, it's great to see them get to take centre-stage here - and it's likewise a refreshing change to see them playing the hunted rather than the hunter.

Throw in other impressive turns from Brea Grant, Amy Brassette and Shanna Forrestall, complete with a whole host of horror nods, and Smothered is one of horror's best kept secrets of recent years.
