10 Hidden Horror-Comedy Movies That Are Actually Terrifying
9. Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon (2006)
Horror satire is a subgenre that has gone on to feel oversaturated in the modern movie landscape. The trend of subverting the topes of scary movies (as popularised in Scream) has come so far that it even feels clichéd. But, there are still plenty of hidden gems that add depth to the subculture, and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is one such underappreciated masterpiece.
The movie is a mockumentary set in a world where fictional killers from cinema are real. Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees are masters of their craft, at least in the eyes of the up-and-coming serial killer Leslie Vernon. Thus, he gets a film crew to document his attempts to make a name for himself.
The film lures you into a false sense of security thanks to how damn likeable Leslie is. This makes you feel so desensitised to his actions that you don't register how abhorrent they are. Once the realisation of what you're seeing comes crashing down, not only do you feel afraid of the lead figure, but you also judge yourself for having fallen for his schtick in the first place.
It's a well-executed, entirely underrated movie that's so tonally jarring it will mess with your head and freak you out, all while causing you to fall into fits of giggles.
