No one actually wanted to make this movie, not even star Christopher Reeve, who reprised his role as Superman only because he was allowed to have some control over the story, and because Cannon Films would produce any project of his that he wanted in return*. With that power, Reeve introduced an anti-nuclear weapons theme into the film. It was all very well-intentioned, but the movie had no budget and no one with much of an idea what they were doing. The result is an embarrassing, campy mess. http://youtu.be/DfwHe0NqVvY *Incidentally, that project ended up being Street Smart, which featured Morgan Freeman in his first major film role, even earning him his first Oscar nomination. Was Superman IV worth it, then?
