10 Hilariously Awful Video Game To Film Adaptations

2. House of the Dead (2003)

It's the one that started them all; Uwe Boll's first adaptation of a video game. House of the Dead is a terrible film, adapted from Sega's hugely popular light gun series, and despite even including clips of the game as transitions during the film, it still doesn't capture a single iota of the game's spirit. A group of teen ravers travel to an island hoping to party, only to find that horribly-costumed zombies are there, ready to devour their acting credibility entire. It's not exactly a demanding premise to pull off, yet Boll, oddly enough, over-stylises the action amid a noisy, grating soundtrack, with terrible acting, unconvincing make-up and a plot that essentially goes nowhere. I can't in good conscience give the film the #1 spot because, unlike the next entry, it does deliver some genuine laughs amid its badness; also, if you're enough of a sadist to buy the DVD, Boll's director's commentary is a laugh riot, for he essentially spends 90 minutes ripping the piss out of his own work. That, and the fact that he only continued to make films after this because of a German tax loophole - which allowed him to write each film's losses off - proves that he's probably a little more canny than most of us are willing to accept. And the guy has a pHD, for Christ's sake...
