4. Full Metal Jacket - Feel-Good Movie
The Full Metal Jacket recut trailer is perhaps the best example of how careful editing can juxtapose shots and dialogue to create something entirely at odds with the original. Who'd have thought Kubrick's anti-war movie could make you feel this warm inside? Remember that point about half way through when Leonard "Gomer Pyle" Laurence put a rifle in his mouth and blew out his brains, but not before shooting Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the chest? Didn't happen. In this version, it's Hartman's unfailing commitment to helping his soldiers which leads to Pyle becoming the best that he can be and join his brothers in the Army. It's almost impossible to imagine Stanley Kubrick directing a feel-good movie, but thanks to this trailer we no longer have to. "This summer R. Lee Ermy puts the heart in Gunnery Sgt. Hartman" - it seems like he's been misunderstood all this time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7kNSbowBKA
