10 Horror Films Ruined by WTF Endings
4. Vivarium
Lorcan Finnegan's sci-fi drama revolves around a young couple, Tom and Gemma, who find themselves trapped in an identical suburban neighbourhood where they're forced to raise a rapidly growing humanoid child.
Even though The Twilight Zone scenario founds fascinating, watching the couple wandering through the identical houses over and over quickly grows tiresome. Nevertheless, viewers are compelled to keep watching, hoping for an explanation for Tom and Gemma's unique predicament. However, the mystery of why the pair are trapped is never explained. The identity of the person controlling the labyrinth is unexplored.
What's most frustrating is how scenes are set up as if a life-shattering bombshell is about to be dropped. But before anything happened, the characters move on to another matter altogether.
Why does the child suddenly sprout swelling sacs in his throat? No idea. How come the neighbourhood is stacked on top of multiple suburban mazes, each of them containing a trapped couple? Is it a test? Are the prisoners part of a science experiment? Is the mastermind an alien? Is the whole experience a simulation?
Although exposition can kill a good mystery, Vivarium went too far the other way, since it didn't explain a thing.
