Even though it's a well-worn classic now, George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead still stands as one of the finest zombie movies of its kind, and the seed planted into a genre that has become part and parcel of our horror movie experiences to this day.

Whilst his movies have always been politically charged, Night of the Living Dead started strong with Duane Jones as Ben, challenging racial stereotypes in his chance casting as leading man Ben. Entirely level-headed, fighting off the undead with badass calm, and managing a barricaded house of survivors, Ben's demise at the end of the movie is still one that will shock you now should you have missed out on this spooky gem - and laid the groundwork for a legacy in the process.

Thought to be saved as a gang of armed men happen across the house, in their efforts to restore order to the apocalyptic nightmare they're facing they shoot Ben dead; believing him to be a ghoul. He's thrown on a fire and burned with his so-called zombie pals, and the previous 90 minutes of his bravery and strength hang like lead in the air.
