4. The Sheriff's Posse - Night Of The Living Dead
George A. Romero's seminal zombie film Night of the Living Dead ends with one hell of a shocking twist, as sole survivor Ben (Duane Jones) is shot dead by the sheriff's armed redneck posse who mistake him for one of the "ghouls."
It's a horrifying ending and one which offers no recompense or catharsis for the audience whatsoever: there's no extended epilogue where the careless, all-white posse are ripped apart by the zombie horde, but simply the lingering images of Ben's corpse burning on a pyre.
While the posse was theoretically a major help in quelling the zombies' massive numbers, they ultimately confirmed how reckless armed people can be in a disaster scenario, and Ben paid for it with his life.
It's an infuriating ending and yet totally brilliant, even if we surely all wanted to see the posse pay the price for shooting first and asking questions later.
