10 Horror Movie Flops That NOBODY Saw Coming

Based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows a group of sailors who are oblivious they're carrying the Prince of Darkness himself, Count Dracula, in their cargo.

Though Dracula adaptations have been done to death, this fantasy thriller was intriguing since had a fresh take that was tied directly to the source material. Sure, the Transylvanian bloodsucker isn't as big of a draw nowadays, but The Last Voyage sounded like it should make a reasonable profit, especially with such a small budget.

As heartbreaking as it is to hear, The Last Voyage of the Demeter failed for a number of reasons. Firstly, the title and promotions gave little indication it was a Dracula story. The marketing was so minimalistic, some people who were looking forward to the film didn't realise it came out. Just to add salt to the wounds, the movie itself wasn't great, due to the formulaic writing, lack of surprises, and excessive CGI (especially the fog).

However, the biggest reason why The Last Voyage sank without a trace is because of timing. Rather than releasing the dark fantasy around Halloween, it debuted in the middle of the Barbenheimer craze. With Barbie and Oppenheimer annihilating the competition at the time, a horror indie like The Last Voyage of the Demeter couldn't catch a break.
