Throughout this wonderfully bizarre adaptation, David Wong (Chase Williamson) is speaking to a sceptical journalist called Arnie Blondestone (Paul Giamatti) about the surreal events he's experienced. While David recounts his encounters with zombie skinheads and otherworldly invaders, Arnie can't help rolling his eyes.

Realising that Arnie isn't buying his story, David takes him to the car park and shows him an empty cage, claiming there's an interdimensional creature within. Though Arnie initially scoffs, he sees the beast in the cage for a second, causing him to fall to the ground in horror.

Even though we've seen our fair share of weirdness up until this point, this moment stands out for a number of reasons. The creature, which resembles a clump of meat skewered with spindly appendages, looks outright terrifying. Its appearance is accompanied with an ape-like shriek, which is grating on the ear.

But what really sells the monster is Arnie's reaction. Thanks to Paul Giamatti's superb acting skills, Arnie convincingly changes from a deep-rooted cynic to a believer of the paranormal in an instant.

Though John Dies at the End is chock-full of odd moments, this WTF reveal is a standout, despite how brief it is.
