10 Horror Movie Plots You Won’t Believe Actually Exist
9. Giant Grasshoppers - Beginning Of The End
Beginning Of The End is a 1957 B-movie about giant grasshoppers, and yes, that's an actual still from the film.
Directed by Bert I. Gordon, the movie is about scientists who use radiation to grow giant vegetables. But then a bunch of grasshoppers eat those vegetables and for some reason that makes them grow giant. Of course, they proceed to start attacking the city and killing everyone.
During production, Gordon considered using animation for the effects, but when it was too expensive he decided to just use actual grasshoppers. The film uses rear projection so that regular sized grasshoppers appear to be giant next to the actors, and it looks hilariously awful.
For the climatic sequence at the end when the grasshoppers are climbing up a building, Gordon was planning to use miniatures, but that was also too expensive. So he literally just placed the grasshoppers on top of still photographs of buildings, blowing air to get them to move around. At one point, you can actually see one of the grasshoppers stepping into the sky portion of the photo.
The movie itself is full of typically lame dialogue and characters, though in a way that's really funny to watch. How do they defeat the creatures at the end? Well, they use a decoy mating call to lure the grasshoppers into Lake Michigan where they drown. Pretty lame.
