The iconic 1984 slasher flick, A Nightmare on Elm Street, was written and directed by horror visionary and passionate birdwatcher (seriously, look it up), Wes Craven.

However, by the time 1994 rolled around, Craven hadn't been involved in the series for over five years, so he decided that it was time for Freddy's papa to make a return.

Disappointed by the franchise becoming more cartoonish and comical since his departure, the director created Wes Craven's New Nightmare, a picture far more akin to his original views for the series.

New Nightmare gets seriously meta with Heather Langenkamp - the main actress from the original Elm Street movie - playing a fictional version of herself who is haunted by Freddy Kreuger "in the real world".

Langenkamp isn't the only actor to portray a version of herself in the film, as both John Saxon (Donald Thompson) and Robert Englund (Freddy's original actor) also make appearances. Even Wes himself turns up in the picture! If that doesn't hurt your head, then nothing will.

Critics praised this movie for its blurring between reality and the fictional world of the existing Nightmare films, as well as being a welcome return to the terror seen in the original.
