10 Horror Movie Sequels That Broke All The Rules

2. REC 3: Genesis (2012)

REC 3: Genesis follows newlyweds Koldo and Clara as they celebrate their wedding day with hundreds of guest. The day turns deadly when the guests rapidly begin infecting each other and becoming familiar, blood-thirsty zombies.

After the runaway success of the original REC, many were eager to see a continuation of the story. Although not as well received critically, the sequel placated fans as a serviceable found-footage horror. When a third film was announced, audiences were quite sure what they were in for.

But hold on to your hats as REC 3: Genesis completely dupes the viewer before savagely pulling the rug out from under us. The movie begins as the usual found-footage fare of the previous films and we are lulled into a sense of comfort in the familiar. However, 20 minutes into the picture the found footage aspect is dumped when the wedding videographer drops his camera.

That's right, Genesis boldly decides to drop the first person camera perspective and plays out like a much more traditional film. Here we have lush photography, a choral score and absolutely HUGE gory set pieces filmed from multiple angles with a hint of Evil Dead camp to boot.

Director Paco Plaza wanted to widen the scope of the series and provide some decent character development with this one and he succeeds. Clara in particular is instantly iconic as the bad-ass chainsaw wielding bride and Genesis is certainly a refreshing change.
