10 Horror Movie Sequels That Took Risks... And Failed

There are misjudged horror sequels, and then there's Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2.

After The Blair Witch Project became one of the most successful independent films of all time, the producers were desperate to get the sequel out and rushed an unsuitable script into production, resulting in one of the most bafflingly stupid horror sequels of all time.

This one is subversive in all the wrong ways. It depicts the first movie as a fictional film-within-a-film, which was one of the worst possible ways to undermine the original, and while some supernatural force does wreak havoc upon Book of Shadows' leads, it isn't ever identified as the Blair Witch, so there's virtually no narrative connection between the movies.

There are a few interesting ideas about cult movies and psychological breakdown in here, so this could've worked as a sort of meta spin-off if it had been any good. It wasn't. As well as subverting what a sequel should've been, this also subverts what a good horror film should be, with its lack of scares, annoying characters, poor performances, and generally tedious script. It's both frustratingly weird and fantastically dull, which is a terrible combination if there ever was one.
