10 Horror Movies Critics Were WAY Too Harsh On
1. The Exorcist III
The Exorcist III is possibly the most misunderstood, underrated horror/psychological thriller ever made and deserves the top spot on this list. This is the sequel that author and screenwriter William Peter Blatty wanted to create (The Exorcist II: The Heretic should be viewed with extreme caution) and while Morgan Creek managed to sabotage the theatrical release, a collector's edition was cut together in 2016 and released to fans, eager to see Blatty's original vision.
If Blatty had been given full creative freedom then perhaps reviews like this would've been more appreciative of the end result: "Exorcist III is essentially yet another variation on the cycle of movies... in which a cop pursues a body-hopping serial murderer... the major fault in Exorcist III is the house-of-cards plot that is constantly collapsing."
Blatty's own source material, the novel Legion, indicated a much more esoteric, theological conceit on the nature of life after death and given that the studio had Blatty tack on an exorcism (filmed at the last minute by acting legend Nicol Williamson), either cut of the film deserves much greater praise and introspection than it has been afforded since its release in 1990.
A series of brutal murders with an identical MO of a deceased serial killer lead cynical cop William Kinderman to an incarcerated mental patient who bears the likeness of Damien Karras, the priest responsible for the exorcism of Regan MacNeil. Enjoy horror fans, it's wonderfull...
