10 Horror Movies That Abandoned Awesome Ideas Halfway Through

Trailers for 2018's The Nun in the build up to the film's release painted Corin Hardy's movie as legitimately terrifying.

Furthermore, the concept of a demonic entity that manifested as a nun - a traditional symbol of faith and Christian piety - made for what appeared to be an absolutely thrilling backstory. Who was this woman, and what in the bejesus had happened to change a devout servant of God into a Satanic hellspawn? In terms of intrigue factor, the mysterious nature of the film's central antagonist was absolutely groaning with it.

That is, until around halfway through the film, where the true nature of the Nun's existence is revealed. The frightful figure is unveiled as a demon by the name of Valak - said demon appears as a spectral Sister of God in order to hide amongst its enemies, with its contradictory visage doubling up as a form of contemptuous taunt to mock those it torments.

The issue at the heart of The Nun's capitulation was that the revelation concerning her identity fell rather flat upon audiences realizing that they weren't actually getting an ungodly origin story. As opposed to exploring the inception of such an intriguing villain, fans were treated to the depressing sight of the film continuing its slump into a seriously mediocre narrative, left to wonder what could have been.
