10 Horror Movies That Almost Had TERRIBLE Titles
2. Sadomasochists From Beyond The Grave - Hellraiser
Everybody loves a good bit of sadomasochism, right? Okay, maybe not everyone, in fact, not that many people. However, every horror fan does, as it's the basis of the beloved Hellraiser franchise, one of horror's gnarliest intellectual properties.
Still, while people love the weird pleasure-filled torture fests of the Cenobites, there really is no need to have it spelt out for them.
Clive Barker's Hellraiser, based on his book The Hellbound Heart, has a phenomenal title that oozes the concept of dread, pain, and suffering. But, when the film was in development, it went by the far goofier and way more literal Sadomasochists from Beyond the Grave - as per Paul Kane's The Hellraiser Films and Their Legacy.
It's hard to deny that this doesn't sum up the concept of the whole franchise pretty swiftly, but imagine trying to convince your friends to go and watch a movie with a name like that. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.
Of course, Barker opted to stick with a title closer to his original novella, and the rest is history.
