All The Boys Love Mandy Lane spent more than seven years languishing on a studio shelf before finally seeing the light of day in the U.S. - due to its distributor going bankrupt shortly after acquiring the film.

The marketing for the movie's eventual release unsurprisingly leaned into the fact that it stars a young Amber Heard seemingly running around in tight clothing for 90 minutes while she tries to escape a murderer.

But All The Boys Love Mandy Lane is not really that movie at all, and lets you know it, too.

The film's big conceit is that Mandy (Heard) isn't the delicate, virginal flower she appears to be - she's the mastermind behind the killings, and even murders her accomplice, Emmet (Michael Welch), because she believes he only helped her in the hope of winning her romantic affection.

It ends with Mandy escaping scot-free with one other survivor, Garth (Anson Mount), who of course never once considered the possibility that the gorgeous Mandy was behind it all.

Director Jonathan Levine is thumbing his nose at the audience for themselves being under the spell of the protagonist, who while appearing to be a prototypical horror movie Final Girl, is actually more Michael Myers than Laurie Strode.
